The text says this woman had indeed been caught in adultery. The mercy shown her is that she is given the chance to repent and change her life. Torah itself sets an extremely high bar for condemning someone to death. Messiah actually only kept in line with the Torah by not condemning her. The rules for bringing punishment of this sort requite both people to be together and are to be taken to the House of Judgment and brought before elders. Witnesses would have to be examined, there is a while process that precedes pronouncing judgment. Messiah perfectly embodies the Torah’s mercy when he encourages the adulteress and us to go and sin no more.
