David said, “I will show grace to Hanun the son of Nachash, as his father showed grace to me.” So David sent his servants to pass him a message of comfort concerning his father. David’s servants entered the territory of the people of ‘Amon;
Despite the fact that David’s reciprocity lead to some of his men being disgraced, he did the right thing. It is interesting to think that the people of Amon brought punishment and subjugation on themselves because they suspected evil from David and acted in kind. In the end, they strengthened and empowered David and Israel more through acting in bad faith than if they had received David’s delegation honestly and openly. As believers, we have been blessed with much grace. We should be ready to treat others with that same grace.
