Haftarah: Amos 9:7-15

Apostolic: 1 Corinthians 6:9-20; Galatians 5:13-21

You can read or listen to the portions below:

Haftarah

Amos 9:7-15

“People of Isra’el, are you any different

from the Ethiopians to me?” asks HaShem.

“True, I brought Isra’el up from Egypt,

but I also brought the P’lishtim from Kaftor,

and Aram from Kir.

Look, the eyes of HaShem Elohim

are on the sinful kingdom.

I will wipe it off the face of the earth,

yet I will not completely destroy

the house of Ya‘akov,” says HaShem.

“For when I give the order,

I will shake the house of Isra’el,

there among all the Goyim,

as one shakes with a sieve,

letting no grain fall to the ground.

All the sinners among my people

who say, ‘Disaster will never overtake us

or confront us,’ will die by the sword.

“When that day comes, I will raise up

the fallen sukkah of David.

I will close up its gaps, raise up its ruins

and rebuild it as it used to be,

so that Isra’el can possess

what is left of Edom

and of all the nations bearing my name,”

says HaShem, who is doing this.

“The days will come,” says HaShem,

“when the plowman will overtake the reaper

and the one treading grapes the one sowing seed.

Sweet wine will drip down the mountains,

and all the hills will flow with it.

I will restore the fortunes of my people Isra’el;

they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities;

they will plant vineyards and drink their wine,

cultivate gardens and eat their fruit.

I will plant them on their own soil,

no more to be uprooted

from their land, which I gave them,”

says HaShem your G-d.

Apostolic Writings

1 Corinthians 6:9-20

Instead, a brother brings a lawsuit against another brother, and that before unbelievers!

Actually, if you are bringing lawsuits against each other, it is already a defeat for you. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? Instead, you yourselves wrong and cheat; and you do it to your own brothers! Don’t you know that unrighteous people will have no share in the Kingdom of G-d? Don’t delude yourselves — people who engage in sex before marriage, who worship idols, who engage in sex after marriage with someone other than their spouse, who engage in active or passive homosexuality, who steal, who are greedy, who get drunk, who assail people with contemptuous language, who rob — none of them will share in the Kingdom of G-d. Some of you used to do these things. But you have cleansed yourselves, you have been set apart for G-d, you have come to be counted righteous through the power of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah and the Spirit of our G-d.

You say, “For me, everything is permitted”? Maybe, but not everything is helpful. “For me, everything is permitted”? Maybe, but as far as I am concerned, I am not going to let anything gain control over me. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”? Maybe, but G-d will put an end to both of them. Anyhow, the body is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. G-d raised up the Lord, and he will raise us up too by his power.

Don’t you know that your bodies are parts of the Messiah? So, am I to take parts of the Messiah and make them parts of a prostitute? Heaven forbid! Don’t you know that a man who joins himself to a prostitute becomes physically one with her? For the Tanakh says, “The two will become one flesh”; but the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. Run from sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the fornicator sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple for the Ruach HaKodesh who lives inside you, whom you received from G-d? The fact is, you don’t belong to yourselves; for you were bought at a price. So use your bodies to glorify G-d.

Galatians 5:13-21

For, brothers, you were called to be free. Only do not let that freedom become an excuse for allowing your old nature to have its way. Instead, serve one another in love. For the whole of the Torah is summed up in this one sentence: “Love your neighbor as yourself”; but if you go on snapping at each other and tearing each other to pieces, watch out, or you will be destroyed by each other!

What I am saying is this: run your lives by the Spirit. Then you will not do what your old nature wants. For the old nature wants what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit wants what is contrary to the old nature. These oppose each other, so that you find yourselves unable to carry out your good intentions. But if you are led by the Spirit, then you are not in subjection to the system that results from perverting the Torah into legalism.

And it is perfectly evident what the old nature does. It expresses itself in sexual immorality, impurity and indecency; involvement with the occult and with drugs; in feuding, fighting, becoming jealous and getting angry; in selfish ambition, factionalism, intrigue and envy; in drunkenness, orgies and things like these. I warn you now as I have warned you before: those who do such things will have no share in the Kingdom of G-d!
