Shimon the King – Hanukkah’s Heroes VIII

Remember Shimon the Priest who reigned as King in Israel, grew it’s power and influence and secured peace for it.

His legacy is troubling. Why did he allow himself to be made King? He was called Shimon the Wise, and yet he became a king against the Torah mandate. Was this the start of his trouble? Shimon was assassinated by a fellow Jew. His son John Hyrcanus succeeded him. He forcibly convert the Idumeans, something which isn’t done in Judaism. King Herod was an Idumean. Hyrcanus also become a Sadducee. Was all that a failing of Shimon or was there something else at work?

May our Heavenly Father give you peace and joy.
